Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann – Episode 22

27 August 2007

Oh my god, oh my dear god, oh my god. Did you see that? Did you see that?! So, so, they basically transformed, or combined, into Arc-Gurren-Lagann, tour a hole through time-space and annihilated a mugan ship, and that was only half of the episode! HALF! I’m just a little bit stunned, okay, alright, not a little bit. At a total loss of words, it’s amazing. And to think, after the time skip, I was afraid of the direction Gurren Lagann was heading in.

Epic? Does epic even work anymore? Are there any words to actually describe Gurren Lagann anymore? And you know, you know what? The real battle hasn’t even begun yet! This isn’t even the finale, this isn’t even the end! Will there ever be an end?! It was just so beautiful, watching that transformation. I just sat there, sat there and gaped, for a really, really long time. It doesn’t get any better than this, it doesn’t. All I could do was just laugh weakly, it was so impressive and big and flashy and, and, and it’s everything I love about Gurren Lagann. Arc-Gurren-Lagann, just looking at it, just looking at it…

And really, that’s only half of the episode, half! I love this show, I love this show! When the surface of the moon started cracking, forming into that ghastly face, that creepy smile, my god. The most brilliant bit is the climax of the episode. Nia and Simon and hearing Nia’s sweet, sweet voice at the end, seeing her clover eyes and her smile, I want to strangle someone out of pure joy, hug someone to death. Mass production grapals have mass produced spirits! The chance isn’t zero, that’s as good as 100% to me! They stopped the moon and the moon was actually a big, Spiral battleship, the Cathedral Terra.

And Rossiu, now that it’s all over, that look he had when he walked out of the Arc-Gurren-Lagann’s control room actually made me feel sorry for him. I can understand how he feels. It seems, from the preview, he’s going back to his old village.

I went back and watched the episode twice, couldn’t get enough of it. The preview, the preview for next episode, Simon’s sounding more and more like Kamina. I swear, I could hear just a little bit of Kamina in Simon’s voice from the preview. He’s even beginning to look like the man, flowing cape and all! The final battle is on the horizon, can’t wait, can’t hardly wait. There’s something to this show, there’s something to it, human spirit?  The Spiral power, the human spirit, the will to live, survive, persist? Whatever it is, it’s beautiful. Epic Kamina speeches, massive ganmen combining, giant lunar spaceship, time-space tearing attacks, good ol’ Nia back (if just for a second), most satisfying, brilliant, epic episode, “YET”!

*parents come down to the basement to find me on the floor*
    Parent: What are you doing?
Me: I just watched Gurren-Lagann episode 22 and now I’m dead.
    Parent: Why?
Me: I’ve seen the most spectatular thing in the universe. Now I have no reason to live.
Parent: But Gurren-Lagann is 26 episodes long, right? What will happen then?
*parents call paramedics when the mere thought of the next episode causes a cerebral edema*
    *they were too late*

  2. JKTrix says:

    27 episodes actually…

*is in the same hospital room as Laughing Fool*

  3. Xerox says:

@The Laughing Fool and JKTrix – *greets them in the hospital room, been there for a while already*

I remember one time when my mom walked in on me watching Gurren Lagann and started talking about how I had to study. I basically screamed at her for ruining my moment of epic beauty and chased her out of my room.

And of course you have reason to live! It’s the most spectacular thing in the universe, “yet”! I’ll die after it’s all over, because only after the last episode will I truly have no reason to live.

Glad people appreciate my joke. In retrospect, I probably should have looked up what a cerebral edema actually is. I thought it was a fancy word for a stroke.

And I’m completely with you Xerox. To quote some blogger on Trigun, the only bad thing about this show is that it will end. This whole show seems to be the product of some guy’s bet that he could out do himself every 25 minutes. And I mean that in a good way.

You know, I was thinking, if this is going to end like Eva or FLCL, then some might want a second season. Reguardless of how many loose ends are left, I hope that Gainax will resist temptation and keep it as is. Why try to improve perfection.

im guessing u didnt like planet es. 4 different articles after u finished it. hehe

  6. Andrej says:

:O I have no words to describe how retardedly awesome this episode was…

  7. Xerox says:

@The Laughing Fool – I actually don’t know what cerebral edema is either, hehe, ^^;…

That’s exactly what it feels like, because every episode is better than the next, up , up, up and up! It’s the anime that’s going climb higher and farther than any other anime! It’s the anime that’s going to pierce the heavens! I mean, eh, say what? Anyways…

I really want the end, but I really don’t want the ending. The ending is going to be, going to be…, humanly impossible to comprehend and I want that incomprehension. But it also means it’s going to end! Bah!

And, I’m with you on the improving perfection bit. I’d go bananas, in good and bad ways, if they make a second season. I really just want to leave Gurren Lagann as it.

@kauldron – I really tried to write something about Planetes, I did. After a while, I just couldn’t say anything. I didn’t dislike it, but I guess I didn’t like it enough. ^^;…Something along the lines of, it’s over, it was good, I nod and that’s about it.

@Andrej – Join the club! Rather, welcome to the hospital room, XD!

Well, 23 is out and about, but I won’t ruin for you. I’ll leave that to Xerox here. I will say two things though. First, by now, everyone should hate Rossui, or at least be none to found of him. After all, he tried to execute Simon for a plan that didn’t make a whole lot of sense or work very well. But by the end of this episode, all the animosity you may feel toward him will disappear, as Rossui not only admits his wrongdoings, but becomes Simon’s aniki (in my opinion, but I’ll explain that in the next post). Second, everyone undergoes a wardrobe change. While in some cases, this is goofy with some looking like they stepped out of an episode of the power rangers, there are some good ones. Namely:

    Simon…

    has gone…

    HARLOCK!

*raises fist to backdrop of huge wave crashing into the shore with thunderous applause*

*Since I get the feeling that I will be using this idea a lot from now until the end, I’m just going to call it “Hero’s Wave” from now on*

And thus, the final battle for spiral beings has begun.

    Gurren-Lagann! Spin On!
Who the Hell do you think I am!

  9. Xerox says:

@The Laughing Fool – I was so afraid of reading your comment and only read it after I finished watching the episode. Thanks for not spoiling anything. And, yes, I can’t hate Rossiu anymore, I can’t hate anyone anymore. Wardrobe change was awesome, even if they looked horrendous, they’re awesome, just because it actually fits with the show.

Simon, oh man, Simon…speechless….Harlock, I never watched Harlock, but…yeah…O_O

Four more episodes, final battle, permanent brain damage….
